WINTER BOAT WORKS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SAILING by KRISS on 09 march 2019

WINTER BOAT WORKS Before we even purchased our sailboat Celedon over a year ago, we had been warned by many boat owners that part of the fun would be to constantly repair, fix and amend things on our ship… And they were right! It is a continuing process and it never stops.

The marine environment is not very kind to even the sturdiest and the most durable materials and a boat needs lots of TLC for things to last.

Let’s have a look at random things we did this winter, taking the opportunity to be berthed in a reasonably price marina to take care of things:

• cleaning the winches.
• extensive maintenance of the engine.
• various repairs and amendments on the anchor chain and windlass.
• replacing electric lines, rewiring a bunch of stuff.
• organising, modifying, making more space and securing stuff.
• basically double checking every bolt and every screw on the boat.
• fixing the water tanks, fitting water filters.

I could go on and on but I’ll stop this non exhaustive list at that! I just wanted to give you an idea and in terms of time and money it meant an average of 15 to 20 hours a week I guess and we spent less than 1000€ on maintenance and repairs in total this winter.

From what we’ve seen we’re all on the same boat, I mean all the liveaboards where we are seemed to have done pretty much the same thing and I’ve rarely seen someone idle.
But don’t imagine for a second that none of it is fun.
Because lots of it is! Of course it’s never good news to wake up to something broken that needs a fix but this kind of life is different.
You get to share whatever comes your way with your neighbours and you always meet someone with more knowledge and experience ready to give you hand, a tool, a piece of advice, a spare part…There is a sense of community living on a boat that is truly amazing.
So all the boat works are part of the charm, at least they are for me!
