WORKING OUTSIDE WITH FLASH LIGHTS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PHOTOGRAPHY by KRISS on 13 september 2015

If you cannot afford Elinchrom Quadra because you do not shoot outside with assisted light enough or simply have priorities to make (which was our case) you need to find cheaper reliable options to use assisted light outdoors.

The tricky thing outdoors is primarily the wind.
We used to live in a very windy area (omg what a nightmare) and we had to get very creative.

First of all you can forget soft boxes if there is wind.
The most effective way to replace them to create nice soft light are beauty dishes, you can even enhance them a bit with some sulfuric paper (the one you put in the oven).
You can find some to adapt to most torches.
Flash lights can be a bit different but it's doable.

Anyways, we were set this way most of the time:

- 180w torch light with beauty dish with homemade softener. - 2 distant flashlights with home made dish softener on stands with extra weight. - 1 flash on camera. - And of course a multiple stops darkening filter for the following use : If you need to shoot in lots of natural light, full sunlight, and can't burst faster than 1/250 because your flashlights won't take it, you can use a darkener to lower the ambient light.

As a result, your skies will appear darker and your subject will be lit from your assisted light ! Smashing.
