INTERNET IN PUERTO VIEJO

PREVIOUS / NEXT

COSTA RICA by KRISS on 18 november 2015

INTERNET IN PUERTO VIEJO So there seems to be two major companies for mobile phone and Internet in Costa Rica.
One is called Kolbï and the other one Movistar.
The Kolbi is the national company which used to own all the equipment I believe.
According to our friend here who rents out the place we stay in, Movistar is used by fewer people and their network gets less busy.
They are supposed to have decent internet speeds.

Well right now, we are stuck with a 1GB/week key that we plug on the router so that means no Skype for the family and keeping to internet basics, the blog, news and nothing more.
This connection is due to be replaced by a satellite connexion at some point but the technicians should have come yesterday and they haven’t.
Pura vida is what you say.

Really what happens is a very slow connection even to upload our 150kb photos to the blog, we got many lags and time outs.

Our friend was surprised and said this shouldn’t happen but he lives upper on the hill and maybe gets a stronger signal of 4G.
We haven’t tried any of the free wifi spots in the town of Puerto Viejo but maybe we should out of curiosity.

So apparently the three existing options are :

- a key with unlimited internet but very slow connection.
- a key with limited connexion but good speed (in our case it combines limited and poor strength).
- satellite internet which is supposed to have excellent speeds and is unlimited.
