UNDERWATER MISADVENTURE

UNDERWATER MISADVENTURE Yesterday afternoon in Playa Burriana I was getting myself organised with 2 clients waiting in the sea for me to be ready and for some reason I probably skipped my usual security checks when I cased in my Nikon D800E inside my Aquatech water housing.
Maybe it was hot and my hands were sweaty, I thought I had screwed the lens port and its extension correctly, in fact I just had completely screwed up !

I got in the sea and while I usually look carefully for any sign of leaks, bubbles basically, this time I started chatting with my models straight away and carefully left the case hanging around my wrist.
Well, when I picked it up half a minute later to take the first shot, it didn’t respond, I quickly looked at the camera and saw the unthinkable : water inside the case !

I ran out of the sea, opened the case and got the camera out quickly.
Removed the battery immediately, unscrewed the jack cable, and contemplated for a few seconds the disaster.

I have read since that I should have perhaps rinsed the camera with tap water to remove the salt but judging by the few drops that were inside the battery case, I decided maybe I was lucky and there was no need to abuse the beast even more.

So I went back home as quickly as I could, didn’t take as many precautions as I do usually and scratched my acrylic dome (but this is easily fixed).
I removed the cards (I completely forgot to do that back at the beach) and there was some water as well but not much.
Same applied to the lens which was fortunately dry with only a few drops on the metallic part of the mount.
Not a single drop on the sensor ! I cleaned everything, dried it with a cold hair dryer and then but it at rest on a bed of rice under plastic wrap.

Later on last night thanks to my friend Jimmy’s advice, I went to the next door bar and asked for a glass of gin.
I cleaned every part that had contact with salt water and put it back on the rice bed.
I then indulged myself to a glass of rum ! The lens seems to be working fine and as I couldn’t shoot yesterday, I should be using it today on another camera body and god knows I will try to get the best possible pictures ever for these girls who freaked out as much as I did !

I am very tempted in checking the camera but I don’t need to do that, I will leave it with rice for another week before putting a battery back in.

With tons of luck it should be fine.
I am very concerned that it was salt water because I know this is really nasty and through the card slots it surely had contact with some electronics.

We’ll hope, pray and see !

For now I can vouch for Nikon D800E tropical sealing, saying that the card slot is definitely weak and so is the battery case.
Other ports were fine but then there aren’t that many ! To illustrate this post I will use a poorly taken photograph I shot with my mobile for instagram purposes.
