WHY DID I SKIP THESE ONES

COMPUTERS by KRISS on 12 july 2017

About a week ago, my backup system came to its limit for the second time in about 12 months.
Old me would have jumped and purchased another external unit but it is not what I did.

Instead I decided to take a breath and think about my backup system for a minute and how I could rationalise it.

To start with, this is what I own as backup system :

- an old but tough Freecom sports 500Go hard drive.
- 2 LaCie Rugged of 1To each.

First of all I decided to accept 2 levels of importance in my work.
My artistic works and my personal photographs which rate higher and for which no one else but me is going to own a copy.
I decided these were going to be on 2 separate discs (the 2 La Cie).
Then my work for clients, for which I decide to keep a copy because this is professional but then I am in right to expect them to take their responsibilities and have their own backup system when I deliver them.
For these I only keep one copy on the Freecom, and for some only the jpegs.

In spite of all this, I still needed to make space and went through all of my Lightroom libraries (do not believe people who tell you to keep one and that it doesn’t make any difference loading) to delete what I felt I would never ever use.
This is the difficult part because you tend to keep lots of crap that perhaps, eventually one day you might, under a blue moon, look at and feel extreme satisfaction doing so and congratulate yourself for having kept all these photographs all those years.
Well I have finally managed to accept I won’t and I won’t give a rat’s ass in a few years if I haven’t already so everything that’s “meh-meh” is gone ! After all, the purpose is to be productive and create more images, no stay paralysed in the past, well at least this is my philosophy.
So, gone were myriads of crappy photographs and I won’t remember them I guess and maybe next time I’m short on backup I will do the same thing again and shrink my libraries to the few photographs that really matter to me.

For now I have nearly 400Go of disk space on each LaCie and about 300Go on the Freecom.
I am a happy bunny, I didn’t spend any money on new drives and I have a simple system that works.

For the illustration, that some client’s work I did underwater last year in Nerja and for some reason completely forgot about or never had the chance to come across again.
I did and wondered why I didn’t publish those earlier !
