HOW SAFE ARE YOU

HOW SAFE ARE YOU When traveling abroad, especially for extended periods of time and with kids, safety is one important concern.
And it is so to your family who will often be very worried anything happens to you in tropical far way countries.

It is fairly understandable but are we not forgetting quite quickly how unsafe our own western civilized countries have become ? And are we not assuming nothing bad will happen to us in those "safe countries" by habit ?

I personally think we do.
Take for instance anyone with a strong experience of anything.
They will as a consequence be extra aware regarding anything related to that experience.

Someone who suffered from a road injury will most likely drive with acute awareness of their risks, more carefully and the closer the experience the more aware the person.

Similarly anyone who has been robbed, jacked, mugged, will have an understandable tendency to paranoia and if the trauma is recent they might dread many situations that would have appeared to them as safe before the trauma.

But experiences we live through the news, television, radio, internet, newspapers, don't carry the same impact.
First we are almost vaccinated against their being shocking.
Our civilized world has had its fair share for decades now of violent images, horrifying stories, crimes of all sorts bombarded at the population on a daily basis.

As long as it does not happen on your door step the shockwave only lasts as long as your screen is on.

But does it make the place where you live any safer ? I very much doubt it but it's not torturing anyone's guts at night because it does not feel real, and since most real menaces are now perceived as familiar, you do not get that natural fear of the unknown you get from traveling abroad.

Honestly, I feared most for my family living in a place where random terrorist attacks happen and will most likely continue to happen in the most unpredictable way.

Will I be worried for my safety and that of my loved ones in Central America ?

I will be vigilant, I will try my best to be sensible and keep them out of harms way, knowing that I will not necessarily picture ourselves as the possible targets of a random terrorist attack.

That being said I understand the risks "poorer" countries may represent, essentially for my wealth.

One key to being safe in this regard is actually not have much wealth !
