FROM SAN JOSE TO PUERTO VIEJO

TRAVELS by KRISS on 15 november 2015

FROM SAN JOSE TO PUERTO VIEJO So we landed in San Jose, Costa Rica a couple of days ago.
After a little difficulty finding the bus station to Puerto Viejo.
Oh wait a minute, about that, you cannot skip taking a taxi from the airport to the bus station.
It’s more than 20km away and it cost us $28.
We weren’t too happy about it, having a bust station next to the airport would make so much more sense but that’s the way it is in San Jose.

The one that will take you to Puerto Viejo (yes there are different bus stations depending on where you go, it is so much more fun than grouping them together in the same place !) is called Terminal Atlantico Norte.
It’s a small place that can park 3 or 4 buses, there are 2 small diners and we purchased a couple of bananas for $0.20.

Don’t be scared to put your bags in the trunk of the bus, this is a bus that will make its next stop 4 1/2 hours later and believe me you will get out of the freaking bus for a pause and be able to keep an eye on your things.
The first stop is in Limon and in our case the bus didn’t even open the trunks.

So anyways, the road to Limon is very very green, it is by far the greener and wilder country we have ever been so far.
The nature is truly very powerful in Costa Rica.

But I didn’t get to look too much at the scenery.
Since we are 5 of us, one of us got his seat next to a stranger and as the family head (yes I’m so misogynist I know) I took the seat.
My fellow traveller was a Tico (a local person from Costa Rica) called Kevin, a student.
We started chatting even before the bus started driving and we didn’t stop for the rest of the journey.
And boy it was long and I was luck my fellow was a nice guy to chat with.

The announced duration of the journey is 4 hours to Puerto Viejo.
It actually was 6 hours and the last 2 hours were really starting to feel long on everyone after nearly 40 hours of traveling.
The distance between the two places is relatively small (200 km) and I apologize for people who don’t get the metric system, a distance normally covered in approximately 2 hours.
At times the bus takes over large trucks at excessive speeds : simply be confident in the driver and in god !

So that’s the big info for you guys : If you’re travelling to Puerto Viejo, it will take you 6 hours to get there from San Jose.
By the way San Jose is really ugly as s..t so we didn’t even bother spending one night there to rest.
