ONE LEG OF A JOURNEY Lately, we have been confronted to a situation with our plane booking.
This may as well happen to you and we advise you to read carefully and take our advice.

We planned our trip from Malaga to San Jose through American Airlines, in one reservation making it one and only flight in the eyes of the company.

Our itinerary was split the following way :

Malaga - Madrid.
Madrid - Miami.
Miami - San Jose.

We naively thought that we would be free to go back to Miami at any point during our 3 months trip, should we not stay in Central America for any reason and decide to move up to Mexico or the US.
And as it so happens this is exactly what happened to us.
Mostly for budget reasons, Costa Rica proving itself to be actually one of the most expensive countries we have set foot in, we have decided to enjoy another week of nature and jungle and then head to cheaper Florida (yes you are reading this right) and maybe tour a bit of the US or Mexico.

Anyways, our belief was wrong, if you don’t show for the boarding of any of your flight on a reserved itinerary, all of the subsequent flights will be cancelled.

I repeat : YOU CANNOT MISS ANY OF YOUR FLIGHTS ON AN ITINERARY OR EVERYTHING WILL BE CANCELED.

Fortunately there is a way around this but it is costly, you can change one of your flights in most cases.
For us, changing the San Jose top Miami part of our itinerary was possible with an extra fee, but that fee was close to what it would have cost to go to Miami with another company earlier anyways.
But if we had chosen to cancel this part of the flight, the fee would have been of nearly $500 each.
Shorter said we would have been stuck.

So in the future, we now know there is only one way to properly book a flight if you want some flexibility and not pay the price of an opened ticket :

Book your flights one by one, I mean book return tickets of course because one ways will cost you a fortune but make the connecting flights yourself.
It will very likely not cost you more than booking the whole itinerary at once and can save you a great deal of trouble !
