DODGE CHARGER 1969 MISHAPS

The title of this article could also be : LOWEPRO FLIPSIDE 400AW is the best camera bag in the whole world !

So this all happened a few years ago when a model offered to pop by our house with her latest boyfriend, proud owner of a 1969 Dodge Charger.
Bear in mind we are year 2010 something, in Europe, not in the US and a Dodge Charger is anything but adapted to our roads, streets, price of filling up the tank.
Anyways, the young lad was happy with his orange car from the series The Dukes of Hazzard and offered a ride to make a few photos of the car.

I have never really be found of automobile pictures and I accepted the offer thinking about what I could work out to make my shots about something else than the car.

So after having shot the Bonnie and Clyde inside the car with great difficulty for my agile yet too big body to play the contortionist with a Sigma 24mm at the back of the car, we settled for a boudoir kind of thing with our pulpous friend.

The excessively jealous boyfriend parameter set aside, we managed to get a couple of shots with our model before I nearly had a heart attack !

So, having shot from the driver’s seat side (left on non UK cars) I decided to move to the right and realized the car was not quite as I wanted.
So without even checking the right side of the car, I asked the boyfriend to move it just a bit.
The roaring sound of the V8 engine would have covered any other noise and none of us realized that I had forgotten my Lowepro Flipside 400AW leaning against the top right wheel of the car.

A meter later, with the engine still running to add to the confusion and drama, the guy shouted : Hey isn’t there something blocking the wheel at the front ?

I realized in an instant what a fool I was and checked with great apprehension what I already knew I would find ! Damn, the bag was stuck between the wheel and the top of the car, distorted, in agonizing pain.
Poor bag, I thought ! I hurried to see if any plastic and glass bits were bleeding out of this badly injured bag but it was too stuck to see anything.
I was in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy !

With a bit of faith and luck he drove backwards very slowly so as to unstick the bag from the infernal mechanical jaws and I was able to retrieve my material and have my heart attack now.

I opened the bag, slowly, not even realizing I was lucky enough to have both cameras at my side so the bag only held lenses.
But which ones ? I couldn’t remember.
Well, the bag was holding 3 lenses :

Nikon 35mm f1.8 (cheap but good lens at that time).
Nikon 105mm macro VRII.
Sigma 24mm f1.8.

It was also full of other smaller things including the lens hood of the Sigma 85mm f1.4 I had mounted on my D800.
And this is the only piece of plastic that suffered from this accident !

I was that lucky ! I only broke a lens hood.
It actually took me over a year to replace it because I couldn’t be bothered ordering the expensive piece from Canada.
I did find a cheaper option from Japan once and now I have it again.

So, all this story to conclude 3 things :

- Lowerpro bags are awesome !

- Don’t expect much of a model when around her jealous boyfriend.

- Be conscious of what you are doing and not away with the fairies.
