HITTING THE ROAD AGAIN

PREVIOUS / NEXT

LIFESTYLE by KRISS on 03 april 2016

HITTING THE ROAD AGAIN Most of the time when I hear or read about people who left it all behind to start a new life, it is followed by a reconstruction of everything, often to greatest extents than the previous life that they quit.
In a way that reminds me of all the young hippies who mushroomed, potted and LSD’d their ways into life in the 60’s, with flowers in their hair, to end up being the worst generation of consumerists, bankers, money addicts and workaholics the world has ever seen !

Now what if leaving it all behind in a perpetual pattern was a way of life ?

I recently read an article about Shelby and Simon (http://shelbyandsimon.com) a couple from Ontario who ditched their « Rat race » life to live in a van.
They recently confided to journalists the reality behind the idyllic life often portrayed by Instagram #vanlife hashtag.
And it ain’t as nice as one would dream of ! That being said, they are traveling with a $4000 van that constantly needs repairs and they have a large dog with them…

This is what you call a nomadic life, but still, they are going back to Ontario for the wedding season, to replenish their finances before hitting the road again.
This reminded me of Surfwise, a documentary movie that retraces the lives of the family of Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, a man who started a nomadic surfing life in the 1970’s with his family.

Of course, there is no shame in keeping making money and adapting one’s needs and comfort to his lifestyle and I guess anyone living in van wish for a better van, more space, fewer repairs etc…

Right now this is exactly the way I feel in my life, on a halt, in between 2 adventures.
It does not prevent me from enjoying every bit there is to enjoy right here and now.
Only, it doesn’t taste like any « forever » and I am actually glad it doesn’t.
In fact I am realizing that temporarily is a word that offers lots of possibilities providing patience and wisdom.

While part of this world has chosen to temporarily form families, make kids, ditch that and start again every 10 years or less, while keeping their jobs, homes, egos, bank accounts, habits etc… Another small part has decided to keep their « forever » into values, families, love and ditch all the rest.
The rest, vast majority of the world only struggles to find drinkable water and food and actually don’t give a shit about all that !
