COSTA RICAN EXPENSIVE TOURS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

COSTA RICA by KRISS on 29 november 2015

This is something very frustrating when in a country and none of the activities on offer can fit in your budget.
Of course Costa Rica is a very beautiful country and there will be lots of free activities, all of them consisting of witnessing the wildlife around you though.
But if it comes to either eating out, drinking out or taking a trip to a nearby place to visit a park, a tour or anything be prepared to pay a high price.
We had very little expectations regarding tours in Puerto Viejo but we had planned to visit 4 places and we ended up doing none :

- the jaguar rescue center.
Although the money is used to help the animals, well, partly, almost $20 per head to visit a rescue center for animals (in a place where you’ll get to see all the same animals for free), is exaggerated.

- the same applies to the Ara parrots tour that costs $30/adult.
You walk up to the place where Aras come back in the afternoon in the wild and you get to see them for an hour before nigh time.
Meaning you’ll probably get about 30 minutes to get enough light to take any pictures.
Again, this is really expensive.

- Visiting a chocolate factory : $25 per head.
Are you kidding ? And this to end up the tour in a little factory shop to buy delicious but noteless overpriced chocolate.
We passed on that one as well.

- And finally, the indian village : $50 per head for the small tour, close to $100 per head for the full tour.
Guys, this is the price of a plane ticket from San Jose to Miami.
You are going only a few miles from Puerto Viejo and then down a river on a precarious canoe to see a traditional village.
But then in the traditional village we understood that many people go to buy cheap booze because it is in Panama and the booze is cheaper.
So as you don’t pass the customs which is technically illegal, you bring back cheap booze.

Ok, there are other expensive tours such as a trip to the Islands of Bocas del Toro in Panama, or rafting or many other things but we didn’t really care about them.

But for the 4 activities we had planned, we were very disappointed not to be able to do them because of their too high price.

Never mind, tomorrow we’re going to Cahuita national park which is completely free (you pay an entrance fee but you give what you want) !
